The place & the work.

Ornamental gates and sweeping railings frame Petworth House’s stone façade. These owner-supplied photographs bring the house, its landscape and the intricate detail of its ironwork into view.

The National Trust calls Petworth’s passage into the Deer Park the ‘Tijou Gate’, without identifying its maker or date. The restoration project’s account describes Victorian gates after a Tijou design, rather than original Tijou manufacture. The owner identifies all five photographs as Petworth; that identification is retained without claiming every pictured gate is the named object.

Conservation & restoration

Preserving the record.

The Petworth Gates restoration project describes work commissioned by the National Trust and records the gates as a Victorian interpretation of Tijou’s design. This contractor account is distinguished from the National Trust’s property description.
